Photograph (and 1 negative). Black and white photo showing one of Joe Louis' most famous fights which was the rematch against Max Schmeling at Yankee Stadium on June 22, 1938. Louis had fought Schmeling early on in his career and had been defeated. This match was important because Schmeling, a German, had been inaccurately portrayed by the media as a Nazi and Louis as leader of the free world. The bout took on political significance when Louis knocked down Schmeling in the first round in New York.
