The photo shows a group of five men who are dressed in winter clothing and are standing on frozen Lake Michigan near the shoreline. One of them is using a rod to check water depths. A shovel, a pick, and box of supplies are resting on the snow-covered ice near the group. Large evergreen trees are visible along the shoreline in the background. Handwritten pencil text on the verso reads "379-14, ML-3801, Sounding thru ice at Straits of Mackinac." An adjacent black ink date stamp shows "Feb. 16, 1953."
