Print. Black and white photographic print of a window display at J.L. Hudson Company Department Store. Featured in the display is signage for the 5th War Loan which reads, "You Are An American - Deep in your hear you have the faith that these boys will not let you down. They won't...but, for the love you bear your country, for the preservation of all the privileges you are enjoying here at home - help them, help them by BUYING WAR BONDS, remember you're loaning, not giving." Also featured is an oversized envelope addressed to Mr. Frank Isbey of the United States Treasury War Finance Committee for Michigan, also included is the accompanying letter from Corp. William B. Loudism, U.S.M.C., which reads, "Dear Mr. Isbey - Thanks Mr. Isbey, for the hearty U-Mail. And congratulations on the great showing of the Wolverine State! Your letter pulled in just before we enhanced for this, our present location. Hence the delay in answering it. No more words of mine, I know, could ever very well impress those in the homeland with the utterly fierce need we out here have for all possible support - spiritual, financial, material - of the all-out kind. Such help is vital. May those at home never faint nor fag in granting this support. Should that ever happen, this toss in the towel for all we stand and fall for. As you can see here, words are weak in expressing a need so strong. A kid's death and a boy's agony (if you could see it) would do the trick. Enclosed is a verse you perhaps may wish to use in your campaign. The title will explain it. Again, thanks Mr. Isbey, All Success - Corp. William B. Loudism U.S.M.C." The adjacent verse, mentioned in the letter reads, "On Returning to the Scene of Former Battles, We come where Honor wooed the day, And stalked the awful night away; Where dusk and danger settled fast, And Death struck thru the overcast. Where trials were hot and terror high, And boys to boyhood bade goodbye. We softly tread the ground where lay, Those so young hosts to deaths decay; And sigh where many a lad was downed, When guns dictated death around. All's over now and Soft rules here. Hell flung it's fling and Doom passed near; They fell who scare had lived a day, But living lived a life away. They say when the fall tale was told, Valhalla's hosts, those bearded bold, Sat hushed; and when our heroes passed, Achilles stood and raised his glass." Affixed to the bottom of the window display is signage which reads, "Buy U.S. War Savings Bonds, Immediate Delivery, WAR BONDS, 11th Floor, Woodward, Section D." The date, photographic sequence number and photographer's name are printed on the bottom of the recto, "6-26-44; 18980-x; Davis B. Hillmer."
