Photograph, Cabinet
Cabinet card bearing a satirical image combining photography and hand drawing depicting a man wearing a red shirt, black overalls, and a red hat pouring water onto grass from a watering can in his right hand and pointing at a black flying insect with his left hand. In the background is a blue sky with two dark clouds rolling in from the right, along with another black flying figure. The man is standing on grass, which grows longer the closer it is to the edge of the image. Beneath the image is a caption reading:
This is a deplorable, misguided Case
of supplying water to the human race
That he is illy advised there's cause to fear
Or he keep his water and supply more beer
The image is applied to a cabinet card, on the verso of which is a logo for Jno. P. Vail., a photographer. The logo is advertising a new block of the Smith Opera House in Geneva New York. Underneath the logo reads "Duplicates finished." The verso also features a design of patterns within circles.
