Negative, Glass-plate
Monochromatic glass-plate negative taken from the top of the Belle Isle Casino overlooking the crowd assembled in the field to the north during the National Convention of the United Spanish War Veterans held on August 29, 1927. Cars are parked along the road on the foreground. Beyond, people stand in the field. In the background on the left a stage is set up, decorated with flags and patriotic banners. Bleachers and more parked cars are in background in the center of the frame, and to the right. The negative was previously housed in a non-archival envelope with the pre-printed return address, "H.W. Johns-Manville Co., 72 Jefferson Avenue, Detroit, Mich. Asbestos & Magnesia Products." A handwritten note along the right edge of the envelope read, "463, United Spanish War Veterans Barbecue, B. Isle 8/29/27."
