Negative, glass-plate. Monochromatic glass-plate negative from the studio of Louis James Pesha depicting the bow and port side of the freighter JOHN W. GATES, under steam. A crew member stands at the bow, another gestures just beyond the forward cabin, and two more are at the stern, where a line extends from the ship off frame. A coal pile rises above the coal bunkers. A tree-lined shoreline is visible in the background.
