Negative, glass-plate. Monochromatic glass-plate negative from the studio of Louis James Pesha depicting the starboard side of the freighter JOHN W. GATES, under steam. A crew members is at the bow, another walks along the main deck, and two more are at the stern. A tree-lined shoreline is in the background. "Early" typewritten on the non-archival envelope which previously held the plate.
