The vessel is underway (upbound) on the Detroit River in fair weather. Various industrial factories can be seen along the Michigan shoreline in the distance. Downstream of the Fitzgerald, the J. W. Westcott II mailboat can be seen standing by in the river while another steamship proceeds upbound toward it. The name of the other upbound steamship is unreadable.
