-At 20 earning living by painting protraits and landscape in Detroit 1838-39 in Chicago area.
-Became serious Western painter in 1842, traveling all over that section of country
-Exhibited number of paintings of 43 tribes in Southwest -these placed in Smithsonian Institution in 1850-51; later many were destroyed by fire.
-Appointed Artist of U.S. government expedition sent to explore route for Pacific Railroad, 1853.
