Register, Cash

One large, heavy, electric cash register made by the National Cash Register Company. The cash register has a rectangular base made of oak wood that has rounded corners and has been finished with a dark brown stain. A single locking cash drawer is located in the base on the operator's side of the machine and decorative inset panels are located on the other three sides. A rectangular slab of polished white marble is located on a narrow shelf above the cash drawer in order to provide a place for sorting coins and cash. The adding mechanisms are all contained in a brass and steel sheet metal housing that is mounted above the base. The housing is finished with a faux wood grain covering to match the real wood base. The top of the housing on the operator's side is curved and has five columns of alphanumeric keys. A sliding selector arrow is located at the left side and a large hand crank is located at the right side. Various small windows are located above and below the keys in order to indicate sale status details. An oval-shaped brass tag above the keys shows serial number "1653983" and model number "964(3) EL." Large windows at the top of the housing display the sale amount in dollars and cents. Similar large windows are also located on the back side of the register in order to show the sale amount to a customer. A printer and paper tape roll are held in separate housings at the far right side. A 6-foot long black electrical cord with a 2-prong plug is attached at the lower back side of the register. Also, a removable security key is located on the left side of the housing.
