Pail

One 5-gallon steel pail that was specially hand-painted to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the mail boat operator, J.W. Westcott Company, of Detroit. The exterior has been painted white and the interior is light blue. The exterior front side features a color painting of the self-unloader, SS George A. Sloan, and the mail boat, J. W. Westcott II, on the Detroit River with the Ambassador Bridge in the background. Painted text at the top reads "J.W. Westcott II, Detroit Mail Boat." Small painted text in the lower right corner reads "June 17, 1895 to 1995." The opposite side of the pail has three images of postage stamps which depict a U. S. Post office emblem, a port side view of the J. W. Westcott II, and a 3¢ postage stamp with an outline map of the Great Lakes. Beneath the stamp images is a painted scroll that lists all of the crewmember names of the SS George A. Sloan. The pail artist, Steven Witucki, was a crewmember aboard the Sloan and has signed his name in black paint on the bottom: "Thank You, Watchman, Steven Witucki." The pail handle is covered with decorative braided white nylon cord and has two small Turk's head knots. In addition, a length of white nylon rope (3-strand, 1/4-inch diameter, approximately 25 feet long) is attached to the handle. A blue satin "First Award" ribbon is also included.
