Harp, Aeolian

One Aeolian harp. The long, box-shaped instrument is made of wood with mahogany used for the sound box and decorative edge trim. Walnut has been used for the hinged top. The side panels and trim pieces are held together with small nails. Six tuning pegs are located at one end of the harp and six small holes for strings can be found in the bridges that are located on the top surface at each end of the sound box. The name, "Montclair.1871," is shown in black and gold-colored paint on the front of the harp and the name, "Fannie," is shown on the back. The sound box has been stained medium brown with dark brown being used for the edge trim and top. A semi-gloss lacquer or varnish has been used for the finish. The harp was intended to be placed beside an open window where the wind would agitate the strings and create a musical sound.
