Balance, Torsion

One pharmaceutical torsion balance. The balance case is made of steel that has a gray enamel finish and chrome-plated trim. It has a hinged glass top cover with a chrome-plated steel frame and a large glass window on the front for viewing the balance mechanisms. The top surface of the case (beneath the hinged top cover) is also made of glass to allow for viewing a graduated scale arm which is marked in grains and grams. A knob and slide rod on the right side of the case allows the user to adjust the weight reading on the scale arm. Two metal supports with removable, circular, stainless steel pans are located on the top of the glass surface. A long black plastic handle on the front of the top cover frame has white text that reads "Torsion Balance." A metal adjusting knob for balance calibration is located at the lower front side of the case. The underside of the case has one short fixed leg at the back and adjustable knob screws for legs at each of the front corners. On the lower back side, a rectangular metal label reads "The Torsion Balance Co., New York, Made in U.S.A" and "Style RX-1, No. 13241, Cap. 120 g, Class A." A circular white adhesive inspection label from the "City of Detroit, Bureau of Weight and Measures" is affixed to the glass on the hinged lid.
