Balance, Analytical

One apothecary/pharmaceutical balance (a). The balance case is made of fine-grained wood that has been painted black. It has a hinged glass top cover with a wood frame and decorative moldings along the base. The rectangular top surface of the case (beneath the hinged top cover) is made of 0.5-inch thick black glass. Two metal balance arms with removable circular pans are located on the top of the black glass surface. A rectangular label on the center front reads "Manufactured for the Michigan Drug Co., Detroit, Michigan." Beneath this label is a large metal adjusting knob for balance calibration which has stamped text that reads "Germany." Two shallow drawers with knob pulls are located in the base at the front. The balance arms, pans, and hardware are made of brass which has a chrome or nickel silver finish.

The balance includes two containers of weights which are described as follows:

(b) A small, rectangular mahogany wood box with a hinged top that contains one stamped brass coin-type weight in 300, 200, 100, and 50 grains as well as two coin-type weights of 20 grains each. Small rectangular stamped tin or aluminum weights are included in 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 grains as well as a pentagon-shaped link of 5 grains. One set of brass tweezers is also included for handling the weights. The 300 grain weight has additional stamped text that reads "U.S. Standard" and "H. Troemner, Phila."

(c) One small circular tin with a paper label and blue text that reads "Henry Troemner, Philadelphia," and "One Set Apothecary's Drachms, Scruple & Grains. Weights made by us have our name stamped upon them, none others genuine." The set includes stamped brass coin-type weights in 2 drachms, 1 drachm, half drachm, 2 scruples, 1 scruple, and half scruple. Small square stamped aluminum weights are included in 10, 5, 2, 2, and 1 grains.
