U-Matic
Robot Show at Cobo Hall 6-5-84
U-Matic tape containing silent footage shot at the Robotic Industries Association's Robots 8 trade expo at Cobo Hall on June 5, 1984. The tape features shots of a series of exhibitors' displays, as well as footage of attendants.
The tape begins with a series of shots of a Pertron Controls display consisting of a KUKA Robotics Corporation robot spot welding an automotive panel. The camera then moves to the Panasonic area of the showroom floor. Here it films the Pana Robo Modular Assembly System demonstration where arms move a series of varied small parts around, and another demonstration where an arm attached to a Pana Dac 360 controller manipulates semiconductor wafers in a mock cleanroom environment. After another cut, the camera films a Motoman industrial arm robot display. Next, the camera begins to pan around the show floor, capturing people standing outside of the GCA Corporation area, and people watching a SI Handling Systems, Incorporated demonstration. The camera then moves into the GCA area for an over-the-shoulder shot of people listing to a demonstrator. Next beneath banners that read "new generation in painting robots," and "Armstra[...]", a robotic draws a picture of Felix the Cat on a sheet of paper. The following segment features a Cincinnati Milacron display in which an arm maneuvers a probe along the surfaces of a sphere. The camera pans from this display, through the adjacent crowd, before moving onto an arm on display in the Prab area of the expo. Following a shot of a Robotic Industries Association sign, the camera then films people gathered around the event's information booth, and then pans across signs and international flags displayed beside a GMF Robotics sign. The next clip features a series of KUKA spot-welding robots working on a mock stretch of an assembly line. Following a brief shot of the expo's entrance area, the camera captures people working at a bank of computers. The tape's final shot is of a man in a black and gold costume doing the dance, the robot.
The video is on a 3M U-Matic S tape, with a 3M label with "Robots Show - Cobo 6-5-84" written on it. The tape is housed within a black plastic case.
