My Heart Is With Detroit
Devil's Night Program 1992
10-29-92
Tape 2
U-Matic tape containing the second half a multi-camera recording of the 1992 My Heart Is With Detroit Ceremony at Martin Luther King High School, honoring the winners and participants in the anti-Devil's Night poster, essay, rap, and speech contests. The event is hosted by John Mason of WJLB, and the camera occasionally cuts to a sign language interpreter seated in front of the stage. The program is continued from tape 2015.008.147.
The recording picks up with Shannon Shelton of Renaissance High's speech from the previous tape. She's followed by the second place winner in the high school division, Reishia Kelsey of Martin Luther King High. In her speech, she refutes negative media portrayals of Detroit. Next is the first place high school winner, Melissa Boyd of Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts.
Mason then returns to the stage to introduce Georgella Muirhead, the City of Detroit's Director of Public Information. Muirhead takes to the podium, and introduces Charles Williams, the executive assistant to the mayor, Michael Bird of sponsor Life Choice Quality Health Plans, and Nate Shapiro of sponsor Consulting Engineering. Muirhead then calls up each winner, beginning with the poster winners. They are given a bond, and then shake hands with Mason, Williams, Bird, and Shapiro. The camera continues to roll briefly after the ceremony as people begin to leave.
The recording is on a 3M UCA-60 U-Matic tape with a handwritten 3M labels on its top and spine. The tape is housed within a black plastic U-Matic case with a matching label on its cover. The case includes a two page handwritten shot list on City of Detroit stationery which appears to refers a tape of a different My Heart Is With Detroit ceremony.
