Malice Green Tribute
U-Matic S tape containing silent footage shot at the impromptu memorial to Malice Green at the corner of West Warren Avenue, and 23rd Street, recorded over the beginning of a speech by Mayor Coleman Young during his 1990 election campaign.
The footage of the memorial includes the painted portrait of Green by Bennie White, bouquets, signs, messages written directly on the wall, and objects like shoes and a tomahawk. The camera pans across elements of the memorial, and also captures several people visiting, contributing to, and photographing the site.
The tape begins with a very brief clip of Mayor Coleman Young at a church, and following the memorial footage, the video of Young resumes with him speaking on stage behind a podium in advance of the 1990 mayoral election. He speaks about racial and gender diversity among city employees. He also replies to accusations that he is racist. He then stresses the importance of new auto plants opening in the city. In reference to the upcoming election, he also attacks the lack of experience of his political opponents, and urges listeners to vote yes on Proposals A and B relating to school funding. Following Young's speech a woman takes to the podium to speak in his support.
The video is on a 3M MBU-30 U-Matic S tape with a handwritten label on its top. The tape is housed within a clamshell case with a matching handwritten label on its cover.
