U-Matic

Irish Festival 6-2-91

U-Matic S tape containing footage shot at the 1991 Irish Festival in Hart Plaza followed by footage of Mayor Coleman A. Young making a campaign speech at Greater Grace Temple, Rev. Nicholas Hood introducing Mayor Young at a church with a wood and red brick interior, a ceremony involving Detroit police officers, and a police officer talking about an anti-drug education campaign.

The tape opens with scenes from the Irish Festival including an artist sketching a child, people around the Dodge Fountain, a woman holding brochures in an information booth, and people sitting near the amphitheater.

An Irish folk group then performs several songs on a small outdoor stage, including "The Black Velvet Band." The audience is also shown. Next, in one of Hart Plaza's enclosed underground rooms, a harp player performs several songs. The Irish festival footage concludes with shots of both an Irish folk band playing on the main amphitheater stage, as well as of members of their audience.

After a brief gap in the tape, Mayor Coleman A. Young is filmed giving a campaign speech at Greater Grace Temple as shot from a very low angle beneath the pulpit. He refutes that he is only focusing on downtown instead of the neighborhoods, mentions Bishop David Ellis, and criticizes his political opponents.

Then, in church with a brick rear wall, and a wooden ceiling, Nicholas Hood is filmed introducing Mayor Coleman A. Young.

The tape then cuts again, and resumes with a long shot of a procession of police officers filing around a large auditorium or banquet room, as shoot from above.

The final section on the tape features a police officer speaking to an audience about police training, and then showing a video about the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program on a small TV.

The recordings are on a 3M UCA-30S U-Matic S tape with a handwritten City of Detroit Department of Public Information Video Production label. The tape is housed within a black plastic latching case with a matching label on its cover.
