The fifth exhibition in the Wayne County History Project features Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Woods, Grosse Pointe Shores, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Park, and Harper Woods, six communities that helped shape Wayne County.
Discover how the Pointes became known for wealth, opulent architecture, and life along Lake St. Clair, while Harper Woods evolved from farmland into a cultural melting pot anchored by Eastland Mall and Detroit’s music scene. From the rise of thriving suburban neighborhoods to the realities of segregation, class division, and exclusion, this exhibit examines the impact of migration, education, recreation, and race relations on these neighboring east side communities.
The Wayne County History Project honors the people, places, and moments that built Wayne County’s 43 vibrant communities in six rotating exhibitions and an online history archive. Exhibitions will be on display at the Guardian Building (500 Griswold St, Detroit, MI 48226). Presented by the Detroit Historical Society and Wayne County Executive Office.
