Incorporated in 1895 and opened in 1896, Woodlawn ranks among Detroit’s largest and most historic cemeteries. Industrial and automotive history is especially prominent, as many of the city’s most significant businessmen of the early 20th century are buried or interred here. Join author, photographer and architectural historian Dale A. Carlson for an exploration of the history embodied by one of Wayne County’s most important burial grounds. Noted personalities of Detroit’s past covered during this tour include the Dodge Brothers, John and Horace, and their wives, Matilda and Anna, Henry Ford’s only child, Edsel, and Edsel’s wife, Eleanor, department store pioneer, J.L. Hudson, former Michigan Governor, Alex J. Groesbeck, and the greatest of soul singers, Aretha Franklin, among many others.
