On the Shoulders of Giants is a dynamic, all-ages celebration of Black history, creativity, and community that brings Detroit’s Black legacy to life. High school students from the Detroit Public Schools Community District and Detroit Community School–Charter bring history to life through first-person narratives, dramatic monologues, and multimedia performances honoring both celebrated and under-recognized African American Detroiters.
The event highlights the people, movements, and ideas that have shaped the city across generations through living history presentations and engaging conversations. Designed to inspire reflection and connection, On the Shoulders of Giants invites audiences to consider how the past informs the present—and how today’s leaders, artists, and visionaries continue to build on that legacy.
