Detroit Historical Society Field Curator Billy Wall-Winkle will explore the causes and events of Detroit’s 1967 uprising, one of the most significant turning points in the city’s history. Attendees will gain insight into the complex social, economic, and political conditions that led to the unrest, as well as the immediate events that unfolded during those turbulent days. Understanding what sparked the riot—or rebellion, as it is often called—is essential to understanding Detroit’s past and its lasting impact on the community. The lecture also addresses and dispels common myths and misconceptions about ’67, providing a clearer, more nuanced picture of how the events shaped the city’s future.
