In 1907, shortly after graduating from Syracuse University, Emily Butterfield (1884-1958) of Highland Park became the first woman to be licensed as an architect in the State of Michigan. A decade later she joined her accomplished father, Wells, in the partnership of Butterfield & Butterfield, designing in tandem numerous churches throughout the state and the Detroit metro area that still stand.
Join author, photographer and architectural historian Dale A. Carlson for an hour long examination of Butterfield’s pioneering life and career that includes many close looks at her extant inventory of structures in close proximity to Detroit.
