Tickets are still available for the J.W. Westcott Company tour at 10:00am
Go behind the scenes of one of Detroit’s most unique and enduring businesses—the J.W. Westcott Company, home of the only floating ZIP code in the U.S.: 48222. Founded in 1874 by Captain John Ward Westcott and still operated by his fifth-generation descendants, this remarkable maritime business delivers mail and packages directly to Great Lakes freighters from the middle of the Detroit River.
This shore-based tour offers a close look at the company’s operations and legacy. You’ll explore the dock, walk through the historic lobby filled with memorabilia and timeline displays, and hear how this floating post office became a Detroit icon. Guests will have time for Q&A with staff and can purchase souvenirs to remember their visit.
To dive deeper into the Westcott story, don’t miss Mail by the Pail: The J. W. Westcott Company exhibition at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, open from August 2025 through August 2026—a perfect companion to this behind-the-scenes experience.
*We will not travel on the water or leave the dock on this tour. The majority of the tour will take place off the boat.
