The fourth exhibition in the Wayne County History Project features Woodhaven, Gibraltar, Wyandotte, Grosse Ile, Riverview, Trenton, and Rockwood, seven communities that helped shape Wayne County.
Explore how waterways, industry, innovation, and civic pride shaped small villages into lasting cornerstones of Michigan history. Visitors will discover Gibraltar’s steelmaking legacy and conservation leadership, Grosse Ile’s maritime history and lighthouse heritage, Riverview’s Cold War Nike missile base and fight for incorporation, Rockwood’s restoration of Point Mouille as a vital migratory bird habitat, Trenton’s shipbuilding and early electric automobile production, Woodhaven’s rise as an industrial and transportation hub, and Wyandotte’s chemical manufacturing and immigrant-built workforce.
The Wayne County History Project honors the people, places, and moments that built Wayne County’s 43 vibrant communities in six rotating exhibitions and an online history archive. Exhibitions will be on display at the Guardian Building (500 Griswold St, Detroit, MI 48226). Presented by the Detroit Historical Society and Wayne County Executive Office.
